What is the toughest machine in the gym? We look at 4 Vertical Climbers.
It usually turns out that the toughest machine in the gym is the one you’re not using; however, the vertical climber exercise machine will have you torching calories in bulk if you’re up for a challenge. We have a review of one such torture machine in our stepper machine reviews section, it is the Maxi Climber vertical climber machine.
If you frequent a gym, you’ve probably seen it already: It’s that tall, slim machine tucked away in the corner, you might have even seen someone on it (probably with his or her personal trainer in tow) but chances are, it’s probably available right now. It’s called a vertical climbing machine and it mimics hauling yourself up an extremely steep mountain face or scaling a very tall wall. Spending just a few minutes on it can burn mega calories, between 10 and 20 per minute depending on your weight and the intensity at which you work. This level of activity significantly increases your aerobic capacity, and pretty much tones you from head to toe physically and mentally. So why do we all avoid it? Because it’s really, really hard work.
So, given that all of the fitness machines we are looking at here on our stepper machine reviews website are designed to make you work and get fit, let’s take a look at some of the features and benefits that makes a Vertical Climber Exercise Machine “top of the calorie burners and muscle busters”.
Vertical climber Reviews:
Searching for reviews and comparisons of the different vertical climbing machines is quite a challenge in itself. Not only are there very few fitness machines of this type for home or non-commercial use out there, there is a definite reluctance for reviewers to go the extra mile and put some original material together that would answer a lot of the questions readers might have.
Let’s take a quick look at some of the vertical climbers available:
The Sunny Folding Climbing Stepper is also a leg and body crunching climber / stepper from Sunny Health and Fitness who are one of the most respected fitness machine manufactures. This particular model is a light duty machine in terms of the energy it requires to operate, it does have adjustable resistance for the stepping motion however the handle bars do not move and therefore the upper body misses out to some degree on the benefits provided by the full-on climbers that work the arms as well. The machine is non the less a very popular piece of equipment it comes in at #14 in Sports & Outdoors > Sports & Fitness > Exercise & Fitness > Cardio Training > Step Machines on Amazon.
The Maxi Climber Vertical Climber is the number 1 best seller in Amazon.com’s Strength Training Weights category and you can find our in-depth review of it here. To give you a quick summary, this is one of those arm and leg grinders! Resistance is provided by your own body weight and if you’re really keen, you can get an even tougher workout by adding weight to your body in a vest or by some other means. The stepping action is self-regulated as you can vary the step height by how you raise and lower your feet. The maximum stepping distance is about 24 inches. The Isometric non-stick hand grips are height adjustable to cater for the height of the user. This machine is rated #1 in Sports & Outdoors > Sports & Fitness > Exercise & Fitness > Cardio Training > Step Machines on Amazon.
The Conquer Vertical Climber fitness climbing machine is another climber you’ll find plenty of reviews about however there is very little information given other than what you’ll find on the manufacturers site and on the major e-retailers.
Similar in function to the Maxi Climber, this machine is adjustable for people of different heights, the machine uses the climbers own body weight and it folds down for storage. It is a very basic machine and is quite a bit cheaper than the Maxi Climber, however even with the lower cost it doesn’t have the same high star rating and it is ranked #4 in Sports & Outdoors > Sports & Fitness > Exercise & Fitness > Cardio Training > Step Machines.
The VERSACLIMBER CM CLUB MODEL has just been made available on Amazon and it is a serious piece of equipment. The Versaclimber CM Club Model has been built to support the gruelling workouts of professional athletes. This one of those fitness machines we spoke of that is often ignored by the less dedicated gym-freak.
The Versaclimber CM Club Model is capable of toning your leg muscles with long and slimming strides to building explosive power with plyometric training movements. This stepper caters to every type of fitness training. Set it up to train for a specific sport, fitness goal, or competition and you’ll never look back!!
As you would expect, there is a serious price difference though from the three machines we looked at above. This body-builder is definitely in the top of the range class and cannot be compared on price. As at the time of wring this article, there are no review or ranking on Amazon.com however there will be one here on this site very soon.
The Vertical Climber Machine is hard work on almost every level and it is not on anyone’s list as the most glamorous cardio machine to work out on. They can be very plain looking and there is no way you’ll be watching TV as you work out as your face is just a few inches from the console and will surely be dripping sweat into your eyes within minutes. This fact alone is probably the reason few gyms have more than a couple if any of these tremendous cardio, heart pumping machines, and if they do, it’s usually one of the last pieces of gym equipment people will try out….
Vertical Step climber machine benefits:
Have you have ever climbed more than three flights of stairs in a mild rush? If yes, you will know just how effective a workout stair climbing can be. A stair climber workout may seem to be an inoffensive or mild challenge, but if you want to use a stair climber workout routine as part of your schedule you have two choices, you can either workout at home on one of the home model machines we’ve spoken of above or in a tall building using real stairs. An alternative to working out at home is to go down to your local gym and use a “never ending stairway” or stair climbing machine such as the VERSACLIMBER CM CLUB MODEL. You may be asking, are there any real benefits to stair climbing? We shall take a quick look at some of the basic facts and benefits here:
These workouts on a vertical climber or stair climber are intense! A workout on one of these machines will re-educate your thinking even if you think your physically fit. That is a fact we are confident you’ll never challenge.
Your heart is going to get a good workout as the glutes and thigh muscles are big muscle groups that burn lots of energy very quickly when climbing and they restrict blood flow to the lower legs when contracted. When running or walking these muscles provide some general lift but mainly momentum, on a bike they just provide momentum. During stair climbing each leg effectively lifts your entire bodyweight during each action. That is big energy expenditure right there and big demand on your heart. If you want a cardio workout that will really push you to your limits, the vertical stair climber is for you.
How Many Calories will you Burn On a Vertical Climber?
That answer depends on you, your energy expenditure during exercise depends on your age, height, weight, lean muscle mass development and the exertion you are using. With that said, the action of stair climbing or rock climbing demands everything your muscles and heart can give and with all that exertion, loads of calories will be burned.
Any Good for Weight Loss?
Weight loss through exercise is all about burning excess calories that you take in with your food. Exercises like Stair climbing can be an arduous workout that will burn calories and if weight loss is your goal then a vertical climber can significantly contribute to achieving your goal providing of course that you give the machine a good thrashing.
Will You Build Muscle?
One of the key benefits of stair climbing type workouts is that they can actually build muscle. While climbing each leg has to physically raise your body weight with each upwards action, almost as good as doing one legged squats. A stair climber workout will add lean muscle and tone to the thighs and butt like no other workout.
Working out on these vertical climbers and extreme stair steppers is unlikely to injure your joints through impact as you are very likely going to be doing while running and jogging. Your joints will be subject to far lower impact loads, your knees or hips will be much less stressed and you get a great workout.
Before You Jump On, what do you need?
Be sure you are really fit enough before you take on a vertical climber machine and keep each workout short to build up your endurance. Do not try and do too much too soon, you will break. Plan your endurance build up over weeks or even months.
